There’s just something so encouraging about a journal, as the possibilities are endless with what you can do with one. For example, from tracking fun new hobbies to crafting the most meaningful year of your life, it’s easy to see why so many people are going back to writing in physical journals. In fact, lately there’s been an influx of people sharing their journaling ecosystems that they keep in their life to be productive, creative, and on top of their goals. And today, I’ll give you a list of some you can add to your very own ecosystem if you’re looking to have a productive year!

What is a Journaling Ecosystem Anyway?
A journaling ecosystem is the amount of journals you use in your daily, weekly, or monthly life that all work in a system together. While it can seem daunting at first, I’ve crafted a list of 10 journals you can jumpstart your journaling ecosystem for a productive year. Many of these are one’s that I personally keep in my very own journal ecosystem!
Why Create A Journal Ecosystem?
Ever since creating my own system that is tailored to my needs, I have felt so in tune with myself and how I spend my time in daily life. No longer am I wasting hours doom scrolling on my phone or rotting in bed. With my new journal ecosystem I finally feel like I have a road map to the changes I want to see in my life. Career pivots, budgeting, creative passion projects, traveling, hobbies, diary entries – they’re all in my journaling ecosystem.
Don’t get me wrong I still make time for a binge watch of my current obsessions (like heated rivalry and re zero) but now I enjoy that time guilt free, knowing that I’m working daily on my goals. Creating my system has helped me find balance with both leisure and productivity.
How To Use This List
Use this list as inspiration to start looking at what little things you can incorporate in your journals to have a more productive year. You don’t need to have all 10 journals, as these aren’t mandatory homework assignments and shouldn’t feel like a chore. It’s meant to be fun. To get to know yourself, your wants, help push you and remind you what you want in your life! You can adapt your ecosystem as time goes on and you’re never stuck in a commitment to one single journal. So try something new and take a look at which journal might help you become more productive this year.
1. Finance/Career Journal
A journal dedicated to everything carer and finance. From logging your career goals, brainstorming career pivots, to writing down small business ideas as they pop up. For finances you can keep a list of consistent bills, make special budgets for traveling, or even include a list of to do’s when it comes to all things finance related. Ex. ensuring you reach out for a refund, cancel subscriptions, etc.
2. Commonplace Journal
Tiny notes of everything and anything that interest you. Including quotes, lists, random facts, etc. Commonplace journals house all of your very own niche interests. Some people see this as a personal encyclopedia, documenting anything external that inspires you or sparks something deeper you can want to analyze later.
3. Personal Diary
Used to write out your stream of consciousness. You can talk about your day, events that have happened over the course of the week, or even your deepest darkest secrets. This is personally one of my favorite journals to keep, it helps me get all of the noise out of my brain and onto paper so I can have more clarity. It’s like you’re talking to a best friend but it’s for your eyes only. Definitely a game changer in how productive I have been this year.
4. Celebrations Journal
Document your own personal wins, memories with the people you love, and anything you want to celebrate! Some ideas to include: spreads for your birthday with photos from that day, fun trips that you took, promotions and big life events, or even a spread all about your cats and the things you love most about them! Just anything and anyone you want to celebrate gets documented here.
5. Hobbies Journal
This can include notes on your current hobbies especially tips and tricks you picked up or facts you want to keep. It can help you track any projects you have like diy Christmas presents you’re crafting, or how long a crochet project takes you. You can even create a hobby bingo spread for the year full of different hobbies you want to try out!
6. Special Interests Journal
A journal dedicated to any topics that you have special interest in! For example some of mine would include notes on herbalism, a study of Mexican food and it’s cultural impacts, and deep dives into specific theories of my favorite shows.
7. Morning Pages Journal
Morning pages, derived from the book “The Artist Way”, is where you write out three pages of your stream of consciousness in long hand. No matter how silly some of the contents may be, you write out three pages full of the thoughts you have first thing in the morning! If this daily practice is something you’d want to try out, having a dedicated journal would be extremely helpful to keep everything in order and not clutter your other journals.
8. Reading Journal
Track your current reads, keep a list of all the books you want to read (even if it’s never ending, a girl can try!), add book reviews with your own metrics, log books you didn’t finish, add quotes from your favorite reads, deep dive certain scenes – the possibilities are endless. Anything related to my library I’m tracking in here.
9. Sketchbook
Not the traditional journal but I love having a sketchbook in my journaling ecosystem. It gives you a designated spot where you can just sit down and create. If tapping into your own creativity is a priority for you this year, including a sketchbook can be incredibly helpful! Creativity is productivity in my eyes.
10. Planner
Any type of planner where you can put in your appointments and really get an overview of what’s going on in your life! I personally have a weeks planner from amazon and the spreads in it are perfect for me – as well as the size. Because when it comes to planners, having something I can carry around with me in most of me purses is a priority. I usually have my weekly todo’s, health appointments, travel dates, etc stored in my planner in conjunction with google calendar for any hyper specific/hourly time blocks. A planner is an absolute must for staying organized and keeping your year productive!
I hope you enjoyed this list of 10 journals to add to your journaling ecosystem for a productive year. This is a highly customizable process and should be adapted to fit your needs for the year! There’s never a right or wrong way to use your journals and as you continue to use them, you’ll understand which ones you keep reaching for and which ones might need to be consolidated. I truly do encourage you to test out your own journaling ecosystem because this is the number one thing that is keeping me productive this year.
